Haskap

Brief History Haskap — also known as honeyberry — originates from the boreal forests of Russia, Japan, and northern Canada, where Indigenous peoples harvested it wild for generations. Like sour cherries, haskap varieties suited to commercial growing were developed and refined at the University of Saskatchewan, which has become a global hub for haskap research and breeding. Saskatchewan was genuinely ahead of the curve on this one.

Role in Saskatchewan Haskap is one of Saskatchewan's newest and most exciting commercial berry crops, with orchards popping up across the province over the last two decades. The U of S breeding program has put Saskatchewan at the forefront of haskap agriculture globally, and local makers are just beginning to explore everything this berry can do. Buying haskap products from SaskMade directly supports the growers and makers pioneering this crop on the prairies.

Flavour Deep, rich, and complex — like a cross between a blueberry, blackcurrant, and raspberry with a slightly winey finish. Less sweet than a blueberry, more layered and interesting. It holds its flavour beautifully when cooked, making it exceptional in jams, baked goods, wines, and sauces.
